Bringing the IoT into the Vehicle Freescale Semiconductor

In the Internet of Things era, automotive infotainment’s primary role is to intelligently connect the car and all of its subsystems to the driver and passengers’ world; enriching the driving experience and enhancing the safety of the vehicle. Yet the rapid growth in audio and video devices, such as federally mandated backup cameras, lane-departure warning systems, traffic light recognition and collision avoidance sensors, will require more robust in-car networks – as Lucas Merian noted in a Computer World article, Ethernet is coming to cars.

Freescale’s SABRE (Smart Application Blueprint for Rapid Engineering) for Auto Infotainment development system based on our i.MX 6 series applications processors is to speed and simplify Ethernet Audio Video Bridging (AVB) deployment. SABRE is a high-performance, market-focused development system for automotive infotainment and offers a solid foundation for next generation converged telematics and infotainment platform designs. This comprehensive hardware/software development system enables automotive grade Ethernet connectivity for next generation infotainment, instrument cluster, camera telematics and rear seat entertainment designs. This new solution will support real-time data transport throughout the vehicle and replace expensive digital technologies and other alternatives and save OEMs considerable hardware system cost and cabling weight by leveraging 2-wire CAN cabling to replace more expensive connectivity technologies.
